Sheriff’s officials said a Good Samaritan used a sledgehammer to stop the attack, then improvised a tourniquet before the victim was flown to a trauma hospital.
Incident summary
Putnam County deputies said a woman walking near Beech and Hicks streets was attacked by a dog, suffering multiple puncture wounds to her leg and severe elbow injuries that nearly severed her arm. A nearby man struck the dog with a sledgehammer, improvised a tourniquet and drove her to a hospital. She was later flown to a trauma center. The sheriff’s office later confirmed the dog in custody was the attacker and said it was euthanized after the owner relinquished it.
The owner relinquished the dog, which Putnam County Animal Care and Control euthanized. The investigation remained ongoing; no criminal charge was established in the sources reviewed.
