Michael Millett, 8, killed by two loose dogs near DeLand
Volusia officials said two dogs attacked Michael while he was riding his bicycle; both animals were later euthanized and charges followed months later.
Incident summary
Volusia County officials said 8-year-old Michael Millett was riding his bicycle with a friend when two loose dogs attacked him near his DeLand-area subdivision. Witnesses called 911 and attempted CPR, but he died from his injuries. Animal Services captured both dogs, which were later euthanized. In August 2025, authorities announced a dangerous-dog misdemeanor charge against one owner and later evidence-tampering charges against both owners.
One owner was charged under Florida’s dangerous-dog statute; both owners later faced tampering-with-evidence charges, according to VSO. FOX 35 reported Sept. 2, 2026 that the two evidence-tampering defendants’ trial was postponed, no new trial date had been set, and the next pretrial hearing was expected in late October. These remain charges, not convictions.
